The author of “Hitler’s Pope: The Secret History of Pius XII” John Cornwell tells how Eugenio Pacelli, Pope Pius XII, was so fixated on a Concordat with Hitler that he ignored the slaughter of the Jews, Poles, and Gypsies.
To strengthen control over local churches, Pius XII backed the Nazi regime to destroy the power of Germany’s Catholic Center Party and the German bishops, who opposed Hitler and the Nazis. Knowing the atrocities committed by the Nazis throughout Germany and Europe, the Pope did not condemn the perpetrators.
