Judge Orders Teamsters to Stop Harassing Grieving Families at Funeral Homes

By Jerry A. Kane

A Chicago judge has ordered the Coli family-controlled Teamsters Local 727 to “refrain from conveying any actual or veiled threats against any person, also, refrain from obstructing, hindering, impeding or blocking any person’s entry to or exit from any funeral site or any facility containing a funeral site.”

Members of Teamsters Local 727 (which consist of funeral directors, embalmers, embalmer trainees, and auto livery drivers) allegedly blocked family members from leaving the funeral home parking lot, shouted obscenities at funeral home workers and mourners over a bullhorn, unleashed a German Shepard on a deceased woman’s daughter and husband, and disrupted a child’s funeral with laughter.

“We will be here for the visitation; we will be here for your funeral.”—Teamster driver Lester Plewa to a funeral director, a dying man, and his family members who were planning his funeral arrangements

Coli-controlled Teamsters called for a strike against SCI Illinois Services, Inc., one of the nation’s largest funeral home chains, when the company said it wanted to stop contributing to the Teamsters’ pension fund. SCI filed a RICO suit against the Coli family and the union in 2011 alleging that they had created an illegal scheme to boost SCI’s contributions to the pension fund.

Teamsters Local 727 has been on strike since July 1 having rejected SCI’s offer of a nine percent raise over two years. The court will decide on Friday whether or not to grant a permanent injunction against the union.

If the boss gets in the way, we’re gonna roll it over him

We’re gonna roll the union on

If the scabs get in the way, we’re gonna roll it over them

Gonna roll it over them, gonna roll it over them

So always look for the union label.
