One of my favorite Christmas songs comes from the movie Meet Me in St. Louis. Judy Garland’s character, Esther, sings “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” to cheer up five-year-old sister, Tootie, played by Margaret O’Brien. Tootie is crying because her family is moving from their homeSt. Louis toNew York City.
Garlandthought some of the lyrics were too dark and depressing, so songwriter Hugh Martin revised the lines “It may be your last / Next year we may all be living in the past” to “Let your heart be light / Next year all our troubles will be out of sight.”Garland’s revised version became a hit with the troops serving in World War II.
