America’s Founders would be aghast at the depth to which their constitutional republic has sunk. Their vision for a government of the people has devolved into a government ruled by partisan parties perpetually in election mode vying for praise from Washington insiders instead of doing the people’s business.
The Ruler, the Democrat-controlled Senate, and the Republican-controlled House have become dysfunctional, blowing apart even the sanest of objectives. Their debt deal keeps them from being held accountable for their disastrous fiscal mismanagement until after the 2012 election, but it doesn’t solve the nation’s debt crisis.
The only sane thinkers … were the Tea Party Republicans who [argued] the best way to stave off unaffordable debt is to first stop spending, and a debt-ceiling limit should be contingent on a balanced-budget amendment to the U.S. constitution, [but they] were nonetheless pilloried as a cabal of right-wing lunatics, even to the point of being labelled as “terrorists” by buffoonery-prone U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden…. [and] the left-wing media …
