National Memory Loss: High School Students Can’t Name First U.S. President

What do high school students know about civics? The answer is not much if they attend school in Oklahoma.

Only 23 percent of the state’s future guardians of freedom and liberty knew that George Washington was the country’s first President.

To observe Constitution Day, a thousand mush-filled skulls were given ten questions taken from a U.S. citizenship exam. Candidates for citizenship must answer correctly six out of ten to become a citizen.

About 92 percent of those who take the citizenship test pass it the first time; however, barely 3 percent of Oklahoma’s students passed it.

Brandon Dutcher, spokesman for the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs, the organization that commissioned the survey, pointed out that civic ignorance is not Oklahoma’s alone. Dutcher said that students in Arizona also exhibited a similar preponderance of civic ignorance.
