Babies Born in Hospital Corridors: Bed Shortages Force Births in Elevators, Offices, and Bathrooms.

Thousands of women’s lives and their babies’ are being put at risk because shortages of midwives and hospital beds force them to give birth outside maternity wards in locations ranging from elevators to toilets.

Almost 4,000 women gave birth outside a maternity ward, up 15 percent from last year. Hospitals turn away hundreds of women in labor each year because facilities are full.

Tory (conservative party) health spokesman Andrew Lansley, who obtained the figures, said Labour (leftist party) had cut maternity beds by 2,340, or 22 per cent, since 1997, while birth rates rose 20 percent in some areas. Health chiefs admit a lack of maternity beds is partly to blame for the crisis. [emphasis mine]

“It shows the incredible waste that has taken place that mothers are getting this sort of sub-standard treatment despite Gordon Brown’s tripling of spending on the NHS [National Health Service],” Lansley said. [emphasis mine]

Under Obama, nothing is certain but death panels and taxes.

While Brother O’s Bread and Circuses Stimulus Bill shrank the U.S. economy by 1 percent, the French and German economies grew by 0.3 percent and the recession ended in the economies of Brazil, India, China, Japan, and much of continental Europe.

Mark Steyn contends the economies grew and the recession ended in those countries because they had no government stimulus, and the reason the U.S., Britain, and Italy economies have not grown and are still contracting is that all three nations had adopted stimulus spending measures.

Since Brother O took office, the U.S. has gone from one of the least indebted developed nations to one of the most indebted.  Steyn cites last month’s IMF report to show that “general government debt as a percentage of GDP will rise from 63 percent in 2007 to 88.8 percent this year and to 99.8 percent of GDP next year.”

Steyn rightly blames “Brother O’s $800 billion porkapalooza” writing, “It didn’t just fail to stimulate, it actively deterred stimulation.”
