Newsflash for the Pundits: Analysts Have a Poor Collective Track Record

By Scott Ryan

Officials from Standard & Poor’s and other credit rating agencies told a gathering of Republicans this week that a default on the nation’s debt by the federal government could lead to a “death spiral” in the bond market.

We have enough tax revenue to make our interest payments so –not- increasing the debt ceiling should not lead to a default on the interest payments. The actual significance of what has taken place in this incident is being misinterpreted.

Pundits like O’Reilly, Kudlow, Charles Krauthammer and old guard Senators like James Coburn are championing the status quo. Krauthammer is contending that Republicans have “over played their hand” and “appear as unreasonable”.

The fundamental problem with all of their melodrama is they are all making the mistake of assuming that the proffered opinion of S&P and Moody’s is somehow an axiom. Nobody is asking the question, who are these people and –why- should we give their opinions automatic credence? I take issue with the very premise. The notion that our debt- should- be DOWNGRADED based upon the debt ceiling not being raised is erroneous at its core and here’s why.

The people at these ratings agencies are merely analysts with their own opinions and can be subject to their own personal biases like anyone else. One thing that I have found about financial analysts in my career as a Financial Advisor is that they are dead wrong at least as often as they are right. How soon we forget that many of these analysts slapped AAA ratings on CDO’s and CMO’s that were packed with tranches of pure garbage, liar loans. Most of the analysts all LOVED the general obligation municipal bonds that were recently hammered down in valuation. Several years before the meltdown, the municipal bond traders at a major global wire house told me that standard procedure was for these bond ratings agencies was to automatically slap a AAA+ rating on a GO bond if that state or municipality simply purchased an insurance policy from the muni bond insurers like MBIA & AMBAC. By the way, those insurers are not sound. One of the top bond insurers, AMBAC is now defunct and MBIA is weak at best. Most of these muni bonds trade steeply below their IPO prices in the secondary market and are being propped up along with the junk bond market by the Federal Reserve’s exceedingly low interest rate policy.

Sure, we could see a self-fulfilling prophecy where our bonds trade down on Monday after a week of apocalyptic rhetoric. But the major buyers of US Treasuries in the primary market now have MORE reason to bid the price of Treasuries UPWARD as a result. The indisputable fact is that thanks to the tea party movement, we have finally elected a group to congress who recognize the gravity of the situation and are willing to stand up to the demagoguery that has for decades led to the pitiful compromise that CAUSED this situation, which is appeasement of self-serving politicians who have raised the debt ceiling over and over and over again.

If the GOP led congress had capitulated and done what their predecessors have done for decades, follow the path of least resistance, they would have signaled to the world that we do not have what it takes to save this country from certain bankruptcy. We do not have TIME to make symbolic gestures with diminutive cuts and growth killing tax increases, Regardless of what some academic quants think at Standard & Poors, smart money, i.e. countries and entities who buy up tens of billions worth of US paper – should have MORE confidence than yesterday that we are going to be able to exercise the fiscal discipline requisite to maintain these obligations into the distant future. I maintain that despite the manipulative rhetoric of Barack Obama and Harry Reed, the outlook for Treasuries and the US dollar is much more positive today than it was yesterday as a result of Boehner walking away from business as usual.

The “smart money” do not make their commitments based upon the impetuous and prosaic reasoning of a Standard and Poor analyst. If prosperity truly was a corollary to reading an S&P report, the analysts at these agencies and the webmasters who publish the reports would be the wealthiest people on the planet because they get the “analysis” first. The strength of the US Treasury cannot be buttressed by Standard and Poors but rather the integrity of those who stand behind it.

Given the dismal track record of the analysts, I would no sooner solicit their subjective opinion on any financial instrument than I would that of an art or movie critic like Rodger Ebert. Ebert may be just as reliable. Concerning the scare tactics of the senate liberals, the last people I would listen to on fiscal matters is a group of elected ambulance chasers. The President would be much better suited to capitalizing on “slip and fall” victims. He and the rest of the lawyers should stick to that which they understand.

With the power of over-reaching government agencies like the SEC and a rogue Attorney General at his disposal, I can’t help but wonder what type of communication might be taking place between the Obama administration and executives at these ratings agencies that are profitable businesses in the highly regulated industry of Wall Street. “Just saying” – it might merit an investigation as the timing of their sudden proclamations could be perceived as somewhat peculiar.

As to the specious contentions of the establishment media pundits, they should be questioned as well. Krauthammer accusing them of “over playing their hand” (by not betraying us like they did before we lost our majority) – has a deceptive look of legitimacy because of the polls these pundits cite. In the same hour the pundits on Fox were was citing a poll that shows 60+ percent of Americans do NOT want the debt ceiling raised, these pundits cited a poll indicating that some 40%+ would “blame the Republicans if the debt ceiling isn’t raised”. Those two polls are actually somewhat consistent upon further reflection. The problem is that Krauthammer and the rest of the panel use their voice inflection to portray that as a NEGATIVE. If 60%+ of Americans DON’T WANT the debt ceiling to be raised – we should WANT the blame, especially if we actually BELIEVE in the cause which we advance!

As one who likes to consider the record thought processes of those whose opinions I take into account, below are some relevant highlights to compare to the opinions of the analysts with whom I have for years taken issue. Here is my warning from June 2002 about the next crisis being in the banking sector:

“I fear that the next crises will be in the banking sector…The disease is a different kind of cancer. It’s a seemingly inanimate form that is quickly devouring our foundation, which solely rests upon faith, character, morality and integrity. Independence Day is around the corner. Instead of having the nerve to sing the audacious request of ‘God bless America’ right after we formally proclaimed in our Government God, you have no place in America, perhaps we should get on our knees and sing ‘God forgive America.'”

And this time-stamped posting  from a third-party websiteone is from MrArbitrage Sept 21, 2001:

“If they decide to get suckered into that Keynesian philosophy and try to SPEND our way to prosperity, we are going to have to jack up taxes, which will be the final death blow to this economy.”

Here’s a recent example of what Wall Street analysts bring to the table in terms of expertise. One day after I came out with a Buy recommendation on Under Armour, Inc. common shares (UA), an analyst from the most historically revered firm, Goldman Sachs came out with a Sell recommendation:

2/23/2009 MrArbitrage initiates his BUY.

Goldman responds with a SELL: Under Armour-UA initiated with a Sell at Goldman 02/24 05:43 AM.”

Beautiful call Goldman.

Historical quote for: UA

Monday, February 23, 2009 (date of Goldman’s Sell rec)

Closing price: $14.12.

July 22nd: Share Price: $80.00

At Table Of Wisdom.com I have compiled years worth of other time-stamped, 3rd party, independent linked documentations of egregious analyst ratings along with my own detailed remonstrance.

The great Dr. Burton Malkiel has an excellent book titled A Random Walk Down Wall Street in which he expatiates on the track record of the analysts.  The book is a classic and was influential in shaping my outlook more than any other investment book author.  I highly recommend reading it.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS’s) new promotional video “See Something, Say Something” says volumes about how the agency views white middle class Americans.

In the 9:56 video, viewers are told that race does not determine whether or not someone is a terrorist, and yet almost all of the “suspicious activity” scenes depict whites as potential terrorists and the blacks, Asians, and Arabs who report them as concerned citizens.

No matter where you look, from East Germany, to Communist Russia, to Nazi Germany, historically governments who encourage their own citizens to report on each other do so not for any genuine safety concerns or presumed benefits to security, but in order to create an authoritarian police state that coerces the people into policing each other’s behavior and thoughts.”

Never forget it was a 2009 DHS report “Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Environment Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment” that described opponents of abortion, illegal immigration, and big government as potential terrorist threats, and the Ruler’s former senior advisor David Axelrod who said the Tea Party movement was “unhealthy.”

Submit questions or concerns regarding DHS’ characterization of white people as terrorists to the House Appropriations Committee’s Subcommittee on Homeland Security. Subcommittee members include:

The federal government has a spending problem, and some of its proliferate spending involves “institutional waste.” At a time when the nation is broke and headed for bankruptcy, the federal government’s National Institutes of Health (NIH) uses tax dollars for data collection to determine the effect of penis size on the sex life of a homosexual man.

[A]t least $9.4 million went to a 10-year study that included the penis-size research …

Hunter College used NIH grant money to produce the 2009 report, “The Association Between Penis Size and Sexual Health Among Men Who Have Sex with Men.” The report determined that homosexuals “with ‘below average penises’ were more likely to assume a ‘bottom’ sexual position, while those with ‘above average penises’ were more likely to assume a ‘top’ sexual position. Those with average penises identified themselves as ‘versatile’ in the bedroom.”

The study also found that well-endowed homosexuals enjoyed their lifestyle more but were a greater risk to contract certain sexually transmitted diseases.

Hunter College professor Jeffrey Parsons said the study was necessary to assess “the association between penis size and socio-sexual health” among men who have sex with men.

City leaders in Salinas, California, gave over half a million tax-payer dollars to a start-up company to build environmentally-friendly electric cars, but the heralded job creator closed up shop before any vehicles came off the assembly line.

The city’s mayor, director of economic development, and council members were all aflutter when Green Vehicles agreed to move its operation to Salinas. Mayor Dennis Donohue said the company would pave the way in creating jobs, and Economic Development Director Jeff Weir envisioned Salinas as the “electric valley,” the hub for alternative energy production.

“When I first ran for mayor, today is exactly what I had in mind for the future of Salinas.”—Dennis Donohue, Mayor of Salinas

But earlier this month, Green Vehicles President and Co-Founder Mike Ryan e-mailed city leaders with the news that the 70 new jobs and the $700,000 in annual taxes his company promised were gone, and so was the city’s investment money.

Donohue was “surprised and disappointed” by the news, and city officials were upset that Ryan had used e-mail to break the news.

City leaders are now frantically working with state officials to recoup some of the tax-payer money they wasted pursuing their pipe dream.

“You’re spending money where you shouldn’t be, you’re just handing it over. It doesn’t belong to you Mayor Donohue.”—Margaret Bonetti, Salinas resident

In a voice vote, the House Republicans passed an amendment to block the Energy Department’s new light bulb efficiency standards from taking effect next year. DOE’s new standards would require traditional incandescent light bulbs to be 30 percent more energy efficient.

Representative Michael Burgess’ (R-Texas) amendment doesn’t repeal the federal standards; it only keeps DOE from enforcing the new standards through September 2012. Unless Congress removes the regulatory language in the 2007 funding bill, the amendment will have to be attached each year

The amendment will likely pass the Senate and get signed into law because it’s a rider on the bill that funds all energy and water-development agencies.

The banning of incandescent bulbs has come to symbolize an overreaching, regulatory nanny-state. At least for now, the American people can choose the type of light bulb they prefer in their homes.

Both Democrats and the Ruler opposed the Burgess amendment.

Ohio lawmakers have introduced legislation that would direct federal and state tax dollars to state, county, and local health centers rather than fund abortion mills such as Planned Parenthood.

“This legislation will ensure that family planning dollars are spent in an efficient and ethical manner that prioritizes comprehensive care.”—Kris Jordan, state senator

Similar legislation has been adopted in Texas, Kansas, and Tennessee.

Scientists have discovered a new strain of gonorrhea that is resistant to all currently recommended antibiotics, and it could become a global public health threat.

The new “superbug” strain, called H041, cannot be killed by cephalosporin-class antibiotics, the last remaining drugs still effective in treating gonorrhea.

“[T]his bacterium has shown a remarkable capacity to develop resistance mechanisms to all drugs introduced to control it.”—Magnus Unemo of the Swedish Reference Laboratory for Pathogenic Neisseria

If left untreated, Gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility in women. The STD is most prevalent in south and southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates the U.S. has about 700,000 gonorrhea cases a year.

Communist Party USA leader Sam Webb says that his party will continue to support the Ruler and the Democrat Party in 2012. Although Webb admits he’s disappointed with certain aspects of the Ruler’s domestic and foreign policy, he says he understands that the Ruler operates in a very hostile political environment where right wingers work overtime to wreck his initiatives every step of the way.

“Neither party is anti-capitalist, but they aren’t identical either. Differences exist at the levels of policy and social composition. And despite the many frustrations of the past two years, the election of Barack Obama was historic and gave space to struggle for a people’s agenda.

If … the Republicans had been victorious in 2008 the character of class and democratic struggles would have unfolded very differently. Our movement would have been on the defensive from Day One …”— Sam Webb, Communist Party USA leader

Yet, Glenn Beck, Jerry Doyle, and a gaggle of lesser known radio talk show hosts keep telling audiences that there’s not a dimes worth of difference between the two parties.

Eric Holder’s Justice Department allowed some “blue” states to disenfranchise military voters serving overseas during the 2010 mid-term elections. A report conducted by the Military Voter Protection Project (MVP) found that less than 5 percent of military personnel voted last year because DoJ failed to enforce federal law.

The 2009 Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment (MOVE) Act requires states to send absentee ballots to troops and their families at least 45 days before ballots are due. In the 2010 elections, 14 states failed to meet the deadline, yet DoJ filed suit against only some of them.

  • Illinois had 35 counties that violated MOVE provisions.
  • Maryland sent ballots for the federal elections but withheld ballots for the local elections.
  • New York tossed out one of every three ballots cast, even though the ballots arrived within the negotiated time frame.

The study also showed that other states counted 94.1 percent of the ballots, despite confusion in sending them out.

“The states didn’t have clear guidelines from the Department of Justice from the very beginning, even though the Department of Justice promised to provide those guidelines”—Eric Eversole, MVP founder and author of the report

Major League Baseball’s greatest moment occurred April 25, 1976, in Dodger Stadium, when Chicago Cubs outfielder Rick Monday snatched the American flag from two protesters who had bolted from the stands and were attempting to ignite it in centerfield.

William Thomas had put the flag on the ground, knelt down, sprayed it with lighter fluid, and was in the process of striking the match to set it ablaze when Monday dashed over, grabbed it off the turf, and ran with it in his hand to the third base line.

Authorities said Thomas and his 11-year-old son had attempted to desecrate the flag to draw attention to Mrs. Thomas’ internment in a Missouri mental institution.

Monday’s quick reaction prevented the desecration of America’s symbol of freedom. His action not only honored the American flag and every American citizen, but it also stands as a testament to what once was the great American pastime.

Dead Bats and the Downside of Wind Power

By Jerry A. Kane

Pennsylvania’s 420 wind turbines have killed more than 10,000 bats last year alone, and the Ruler’s push to solve America’s energy woes with green technologies by 2030 will add another 2,480 killing machines to afflict the creatures and blight the state’s landscape.

“Dead bats are turning up beneath wind turbines all over the world. Bat fatalities have now been documented at nearly every wind facility in North America … and several of these sites are estimated to cause the deaths of thousands of bats per year.”

Bats are nature’s pest controllers. They eat millions of crop destroying insects every year, which saved Pennsylvania farmers about $74 an acre last year or about $278 million. Fewer bats mean more insects, and that leads to more pesticides and higher food prices.

“A colony of just 100 little brown bats may consume a quarter of a million mosquitoes and other small insects in a night. That benefits neighbors and reduces the insect problem with crops.”—Miguel Saviroff, Penn State Cooperative Extension agricultural financial manager

Bats are not the only causalities of wind turbines; 1,680 birds were also killed last year. Both bats and birds die from flying into the turbines’ blades; however, most bats die when their lungs explode from the rapid drop in air pressure around the turning blades.

Wind companies are developing high-pitched sound technology generators to keep the bats from coming too close to the turbines. But then there’s the adverse effect of high-pitched noises on the environment.

Oh well, that’s a future collaboration effort to be worked on by wind industry executives and the Pennsylvania Game Commission once the generators have been installed.

It looks like harnessing natural energy may not be a panacea for America’s energy woes after all.

Diner Owner Could Face Prosecution for Displaying American Flag Banner

By Jerry A. Kane

George Fotakis, owner of the Four Seasons Diner along Route 9 in Rio Grande, New Jersey, has been ordered by zoning officers to take down an American flag banner or face prosecution and fines of up to $1,000.

“Even though it may have an image of the American flag on the string banner, the string banners are not permitted.”

Every holiday Fotakis decorates his Cape May County diner; and last month to honor Independence Day, he strung red, white, and blue pennants in his parking lot, along with a row of small American flags on the lawn, flag window stickers, and flag posters on the sides of diner booths.

But Middle Township zoning officers showed up and ordered him to take down the illegal pennant display.

“There is an ordinance saying you can’t fly stringed banners or pennants going from the ground up to your building”—Mark Mallett, Township Administrator

Fotakis then replaced the pennants with American flag banners, but the officers returned and ordered the flag banners down too.

“These types of pennants create a distraction to drivers. That’s why they’re not permitted…. If he wants flags in the ground or flags off his building, that’s fine.”—Mark Mallett

Code enforcers see flag banners as a distraction for drivers, yet they don’t see American flags draped from buildings or strewn randomly throughout parking lots as distracting to drivers. They also claim that banners are a clear violation of the township’s sign ordinance, yet the same ordinance states that “the American flag may be flown or displayed without limitation.”

People are very cooperative and they understand that we have rules that are in place and ordinance in place they must follow and abide by.”—Mark Mallett

Middle Township code enforcers have visited Fotakis’ diner four times now, and the next visit could result in the issuance of a court summons or fine.

“[W]e’re very business-friendly. We’ve never gone out to try to hurt business or prohibit business, but we try to have some uniformity so it’s aesthetically pleasing.”—Susan DeLanzo, Middle Township Mayor

This is the 10-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, DC, and Fotakis intends to keep the banner and the flag display up through September 11 in remembrance of those who died that day.

I fight for the American flag; I am an American citizen. I die, and I go to jail for that flag.”—George Fotakis

Members of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) who work at the Tyson Foods poultry processing plant in Shelbyville, Tennessee, have exchanged their paid Labor Day holiday for the sacred Muslim holiday marking the end of Ramadan.

To accommodate Muslim workers, union committee members made the Muslim celebration of Eid al-Fitr a top priority in last November’s contract negotiations. As part of the new contract, Muslim workers were also given a prayer room.

“Eid al-Fitr is one of eight paid holidays for all team members covered by the contract, while Labor Day is not a paid holiday.”—Gary Mickelson, Media Relations Director for Tyson Foods

Approximately 250 employees at the plant are political refugees from Somalia, and most, if not all, of them are believed to be Muslim. Eighty percent of the plants’ 1,000 union members approved the new contract.

The holiday swap does not affect any of Tyson’s 118 other plants.

[The Muslim call to prayer is] ”one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.”—Barack Obama

The Irish government would prosecute Catholic priests for not reporting child sex-abuse crimes heard in confessionals. Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny said the proposed law, which could imprison clerics for up to five years, would override the Church’s confessional privilege law that forbids priests from disclosing information shared during confession.

“The law of the land should not be stopped by a crozier or a collar.”—Enda Kenny, Irish Prime Minister

The Cloyne report issued this week accused the Catholic hierarchy of following Church law instead of government guidelines to protect children. According to the report, the Church hierarchy not only failed to report pedophile priests in the Church, but it also continued to cover up acts of pedophilia as recent as 2009.

The Irish Government went on to condemn the Church’s conduct in the clerical child abuse inquiries as “disgraceful and unacceptable.”

The Cloyne report covers a 13-year period up to 2009 and contains devastating criticisms of the Holy See.

“[T]he Popish hierarchy I execrate as diabolical confusion, established for the very purpose of making God himself to be despised, and of exposing the Christian religion to mockery and scorn.”—John Calvin

The Ruler’s below-the-radar Executive Order will restrict the sale of semiautomatic rifles (except for .22 calibers), increase the penalties for certain firearm violations, and add steps to background checks for legal gun ownership.

“Limiting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens is not going to solve the problem.”—Lamar Smith, House Judiciary Committee Chairman

About 8,500 gun sellers in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas will be given 24 hours to report to the ATF anyone who buys two or more semi-automatic rifles with detachable magazines in a five-day span.

“We’ve learned from our investigation of Fast and Furious that reporting multiple long-gun sales would do nothing to stop the flow of firearms to known straw purchasers because many federal firearms dealers are already voluntarily reporting suspicious transactions.”—Senator Charles Grassley, R-Iowa

Congressman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) called the Ruler’s new restrictions on gun owners’ rights “the height of hypocrisy” given that the Bread and Circuses administration has “knowingly and intentionally allowed guns to be trafficked intoMexico.”

As part of Operation Fast and Furious, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and higher-ups in the Justice Department allowed straw buyers to purchase guns for Mexican criminals. Last December, two of the guns that were sold to straw buyers turned up at an Arizona crime scene where a U.S. Border Patrol agent was murdered.

[The reporting requirement is] “a blatant effort by the Obama administration and ATF to divert focus of Congress and the general public from their gross incompetence in the Fast and Furious scandal.”—Chris Cox, NRA Executive Director

The National Rifle Association intends to sue the Bread and Circuses administration over the new gun-reporting requirement.

Abortion is now the leading cause of death in the black community.

“It causes four times as many deaths among blacks as the combined total of deaths caused by cancer, heart disease, AIDS, homicide, and accidents.”—Rev. Denise Walker, founder Everlasting Light Ministries, a comprehensive post abortion healing ministry

Black babies are the victims of over one-third of legalized abortions in the United States. According to Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates, abortionists exterminate about 1,500 black babies a day and more than 500,000 a year.

“While blacks comprise 12 percent of the nation’s population, they are the victims of 36 percent of all abortions.”— Rev. Brian Walker, Life Education and Resource Network (LEARN), Minnesota

Under the guise of providing health care to black families, minority communities house seventy-eight percent of the nation’s abortion mills.

“[T]he Hispanic birthrate is about 3.2, the white birthrate is about 2.2, and the African American birthrate is 0.9, which means the Hispanic community is tripling itself, the whites are doubling themselves, and the African-American community is not even replacing itself.”—Rev. Luke Robinson

The policies of abortion providers are made by upper-middle-class whites who are obsessed with controlling the reproductive rights of poor black people.

49 percent of all black children are aborted. Blacks abort their babies 3 times that of whites, a ratio that has grown by 50 percent since 1992.

In the 1920s and ’30s, Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger and others in the birth control movement convinced black pastors and leaders in the black community that birth control would help them to get ahead and out of poverty.

“What the slave ships couldn’t do to us, what slavery itself couldn’t do to us, and what the Ku Klux Klan couldn’t do to us, abortion has accomplished.”—Rev. Denise Walker

Instead of advancing blacks and eradicating poverty, Sanger’s “The Negro Project” campaign and Planned Parenthood have decimated the black community. Almost as many black children are aborted as are born.  Since Roe v. Wade:

• Abortion has reduced the black population by over 25 percent.

• Twice as many black Americans have died from abortion than have died from AIDS, accidents, violent crimes, cancer, and heart disease combined.

Unless people know what abortion does, they’ll never understand what abortion is.
